Writing And Thinking About The Reader

You’re going to think about your purpose but before you can think about step two you really need to go back and understand your reader and what they care about we like to say that your reader is only listening to one radio station which is wi i FM it’s an acronym that stands for what’s in it for me kind of silly agreed but important to think about what your reader cares about we want to change the whole paradigm of communication here so instead of telling people what you want to tell them you want to tell them what they actually want to hear and what they need to do to get their job done okay. So once you’ve decided once you’ve thought about your reader and what they care about the second step is to think about your primary purpose hear it write it well we use a decision tree and it’s called informing or influencing and we like to say that they have you always have one primary purpose for writing you’re either writing to influence somebody to do something or inform them about something so let’s break that down a bit if you’re writing to influence your primary purpose is to persuade readers to do something in other words you’re hoping they will take some action if you’re writing to inform your primary purpose is to answer readers questions about a subject so they can be informed or make a decision the implicit statement here is that they’re going to make a decision at some point or they need the information to be informed if you need readers to do something right away or in a precise time frame you are writing to influence or writing also known as writing to persuade we use those words interchangeably right into influence and writing to persuade now sometimes that people think that there’s something negative about writing to influence or writing to persuade not necessarily true.

The important thing is to know what your purpose is the negative thing actually is when you don’t know what your purpose is and you send confusing messages that make the reader work too hard to understand your main point or your purpose so if you’re doing a good job you’re very clear about what your purpose of your communication is okay so go back and think about your example are you writing to tell somebody that they should do something or simply exchanging information and expecting them to read it but not respond alright so think about your purpose for the message that you need to write next okay so maybe you’re writing to persuade somebody to correct a problem to clarify something that’s confusing to send you something or to take some other action if you’re writing to inform them you’re just telling them the facts not just it might be very important facts but you’re sharing facts you’re letting them know the consequences of some actions or failures to act you’re offering a solution to a problem or it might be another topic.

Situation Overview in Essay

Once you’ve got your thesis statement written it’s a question of organizing the essay so that you address the different points that you’ve made in your thesis statement an essay needs to have a clear introduction body and conclusion so there are three parts of your essay the introduction should set up the context give background explain the significance in other words why this is an important example or an important question or important problem an opportunity for you to ask intriguing questions interesting questions your introduction should also indicate the general structure of your essay and it should state your thesis the sentences which we were practicing in part three so an introduction may have this kind of shape starting off in a general way with a broad overview of the topic or situation leading to a more narrow focus on your thesis statement which is what you’re going to address in the body.

So here is an example of a very short introduction perhaps for for shorter essay New Zealand organizations are increasingly involved in international initiatives such as joint ventures and outsourcing nonetheless language and cross-cultural communication skills remain a low priority for most business executives this essay investigates the causes and effects of this situation examines potential advantages of developing these skills among key employees and outlines principles for successful implementation of effective training in this area although companies may feel that business negotiation may easily be conducted in English research has showed that investments in language and cultural training equips organizations with real competitive advantages so can you see here the overall structure moving from a general context talking about the structure of the essay itself and finishing with a clear statement of the thesis the main point which this essay is trying to make so when you’re writing your introduction here are some questions that you can consider how can you lead your reader into the topic what is your essay going to do are you going to compare contrast explain define apply analyse examine of course having analyzed the question carefully you will already have identified those task words in the question what point are you making about that’s this topic in other words what is your thesis statement.

If you haven’t prepared that already that may be what’s making it difficult for you to write to begin writing so you may want to go back to step 3 and work a little bit more on your thesis statement having written that I think you’ll find the introduction much easier to write so moving on to the body of your essay of course this is the largest part of the essay it consists of paragraphs that support the thesis statement these paragraphs we’ll be where you offer evidence remember evidence consists of facts appeal to Authority experts you’ll include data research findings examples perhaps personal experience now do you remember those key questions we looked at earlier for this assignment topic analyze a change initiative in an organization with which you’re familiar and evaluate its success we looked at surface questions and underlying questions do you remember what they were.

Write a Good Thesis Statement

Hello and thank you so much for viewing my presentation on how to write a thesis statement I am professor a Shawn are a Hampton so if you’re watching that means you are student perhaps in college or high school or an instructor looking for good concise effective ways to understand and to explain how to write a good thesis statement.

So let’s go ahead and get started let’s start with what is a thesis statement a thesis statement is the controlling idea of your essay meaning it tells the reader what you are going to talk about or what subject your essay will cover secondly the thesis expresses the subject and direction of the essay so the thesis expresses the subject what you’re going to talk about and when we say direction or purpose we mean where you’re going with your essay but we’ll talk about this in more detail in just a moment thirdly the thesis is usually written in one sentence that appears as the last line of your introduction.

I know that some textbooks and teachers will instruct you that you can put your thesis anywhere in the essay but as a beginning writer you want to put yours as the last line of your introductory paragraph so that it’s right there at the front of the essay it sets up the essay and it reduces confusion okay so let’s take a look at an example of a simple thesis statement all of my classmates enjoyed three wonderful days of reunion activities let’s say this is the thesis statement for a narration or personal experience essay.

So according to this statement what will the writer talk about well what is the main idea when we say these things we mean what is the subject a reunion and because they mentioned classmates perhaps this is a class reunion alright so what is the purpose direction position or angle this essay will take where are you headed with this essay what is going to be the purpose well what are we going to get out of this essay just looking at this thesis statement well they’re going to describe or talk about three days of reunion activities.

So now you have subject what will the writer talk about sounds like a class reunion right well where they headed with this what are they going to do in this essay where they’re going to talk about the three days of reunion activities this is what we mean when we say a thesis has subject and direction okay so based on the information in the thesis how might the writer organize the essay this is what we mean by the thesis sets up the body of the paper well they can organize the essay based on the days what happens Friday what happens Saturday and what happens Sunday so when we say the thesis sets up the essay that means the first body paragraph will talk about what happened Friday then next they’ll talk about what happens Saturday.

And next I’ll talk about what happened Sunday across the three days of the reunion activities so this is how the thesis gives subject gives direction or where this essay is heading and also a little bit about the organizational structure okay so what does a thesis statement consist of what makes a good thesis statement so here’s an example a good citizen should stay informed vote and participate in community projects so remember a thesis equals subject and direction so in looking at this example do we get subject and direction out of this yes we do well the essay is going to talk about what makes a good citizen right how will they talk about this what will they say what direction will they take where is this heading what’s the purpose we’re going to tell you that a good citizen should stay informed should vote and should participate in community projects so this one sentence gives you a hint of subject what the essay will be about they’re going to talk about what makes a good citizen and the direction or where it is si is heading also how will you talk about the subject when we say those things they all mean Direction well they’re going to talk about being a good citizen in terms staying informed in terms of voting and participating in community project so based on the formula here for thesis statement this sentence would make a decent thesis statement okay let’s see if you can identify a good thesis statement based on what we’ve talked about so far let’s look at this example I will examine the pros and cons of hybrid cars that use both gasoline and electricity now we just said a good thesis gives subject and direction so does this sentence meet those requirements hopefully you said no this is what we call an announcement you never want to say I will talk about or I will examine so first off no it is not a good thesis statement because it’s written as an announcement so you might say well they want to talk about the pros and cons of hybrid cars okay that use gasoline and electricity so this sounds like subjects but does it give a sense of direction where is this going okay I know what you’re going to talk about but in terms of what.

What else are you going to give me in this essay no you don’t get that from this statement take a look at a second example hybrid cars are more energy efficient than cars with standard gasoline engines now is this a good thesis statement hopefully you said no this can be an opinion or in some cases a statement of fat but it is not a good thesis statement now let’s take a look at the third example hybrid cars that use both gasoline and electricity would decrease our country’s dependence on foreign oil okay so hopefully you said this would make a fairly good thesis statement and let’s take a look at why what will they talk about hybrid cars but they even got more specific and saying ones that use both gasoline and electricity so they’re talking about hybrid cars specifically the ones that use both gasoline and electricity so they narrowed it down a little bit there which is really good why are they talking about this because their position is that these cars would decrease our country’s dependence on foreign oil right.

So it sounds like it could be an argument or persuasion paper right so we have subject what will you talk about specifically and where are you going with this what’s the direction what’s your purpose what’s your position well to discuss how these cars would decrease our country’s dependence on foreign oil so this is why this third example is a good example of a thesis statement one in to show you examples of what some students might try to write but hopefully you understand why statements one and two do not make good thesis statements but example three does because it gives us subject and direction let’s move on so what are the characteristics of a thesis statement based on what we’ve talked about so far what constitutes a good thesis statement well it tells the subject or what the writer will talk about any essay it also suggests the purpose direction position or angle the essay will take so when we say direction we mean purpose your position or your angle and this might not apply to every paper but it will apply depending on what sort of essay you’re doing if you’re doing an argument paper then your thesis will state your position.

If you are trying to persuade someone to go out and vote early then maybe your purpose is that in the persuasion paper to get people to vote early all of that will depend on exactly what type of essay you’re writing it all boils down to the same thing we need to know what you’re going to talk about and where your essay is heading what direction is heading in thirdly the thesis statement suggests how the essay will be organized here are some key points to remember about the visa statement a thesis statement is the controlling idea of your essay it tells what your essay is going to be about the thesis expresses the subject and direction of the essay subject what will you talk about correction how will you talk about it where is this essay headed what can we get out of it once we read it those are all of the things that comprise direction next the thesis is usually written in one sentence that appears as the last line of your introduction.

The main points of the essay can be implied or specifically listed in the visa statement the thesis statement should be as specific as possible it should not create confusion or raise questions for the reader the thesis statement sets up and organizes the body of the essay okay so hopefully this lesson helps you to understand what it these a statement is and how to write your own thesis statement thank you so much for viewing and happy writing.

Education Programs for School Groups at Swan Hill Art Gallery

Education programs for school groups

We encourage you to include a program at the Gallery in your student’s visit to Swan Hill. The Gallery hosts a program of changing exhibitions of contemporary art or exhibitions that relate to the region in some way. The permanent collection features works of art created post 1970s including naïve art and works on paper.

In a one hour visit to the Gallery activities can include:

  • introduction to art galleries
  • viewing of current exhibition
  • practical hands-on activity
  • customised programs to meet your needs
  • essay writing uk on the theme of exhibition

Children’s Art Workshop

School holiday Programs

During each Victorian School holiday break the gallery offers a fun learning experience for children with a program of art workshops.

Each session is unique and offers children the opportunity to explore the gallery display and then create their own unique artwork in response to what they have seen and discussed.  Activities may include painting, drawing, collage or printmaking.


The gallery hosts concerts throughout the year featuring the beautiful 1920′s Steinway & Sons grand piano.  Classical and Jazz concerts are amongst the favourites.

The gallery also hosts an annual concert as part of the Murray River International Music Festival held late January, early February each year.

11 July –  26 August
Lake Tyrrell in the Victorian Mallee once served as an indigenous celestial observatory. Telescope showcases the work of “Syzygy”, a project which reflected ‘photo-poetically’ upon this lost sacrament by using the now usually dry salt lakebed as an imaging surface for exposing specially made photographic films without a camera to starlight. The resulting pictures are the star lit shadows of live native invertebrates and reptiles gathered from the lakeshore and rare astronomical glass plate photographs brought to the location.

Paintings, Drawings and Prints, 1981 – 2012

From the very beginning the work of Ivor Cantrill has been prolific. Ivor has always lived in a supportive and creative family environment where the opportunities to extend beyond the two dimensional have been many. This exhibition looks back some thirty years with paintings recalling travel, time in the garden, family, music lessons, painting itself, and more.  The intensity of colour, mark making, and attention to detail and pattern, make for a fascinating interpretation of Ivor’s world.

Salt and the Dress

Salt is part of our everyday language: salinity, desalination and a rising sea are all part of the tangible and the immediate. “Salt and the Dress” weaves two separate themes into one cohesive form. It combines the dress when seen as a signify of feminine identity, with the damaging effect salt has on a fragile environment. This dialogue between salt, dress, and the environment, is a bitter sweet narrative, providing a platform to explore our relationship to nature and female social constructs.

In 2004, the work of Lorraine Connelly- Northey came to light over the course of three exhibitions in Swan Hill. From there Lorraine has gone on to exhibit widely and to be commissioned for many distinguished events and art festivals.  Her work has been collected extensively by the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and the Queensland Art Gallery to name a few. This solo exhibition will feature new work and will tour to the Ararat Regional Art Gallery in February.

Chaos Calm

11 July – 5 August
An exhibition exploring the cycles of the creative and emotional spectrum, a collection of 22 works, divided by the conceptual and aesthetic themes of chaos and calm. Times of spontaneous activity are heightened by attraction to vivid colour, intensity of detail, conglomeration of ideas and concepts, and a process of automatic abstraction. Times of grounding are exemplified by restraint and a measured process, more refined concepts, and an escape from overstimulation, shifting to muted colours and naturalistic form.

A collection of smaller works from the permanent collection. This exhibition provides the viewer the opportunity to consider scale, detail and the notion of intimate versus epic.

In the tradition of the true naïve artist, Annette Hepburn puts pen to paper and brush to canvas in the telling of her life’s story:  “When I was a young child growing up in the wilderness I wanted to be friends with the native animals. This picture shows me holding an emu chick which I caught on my way to school. His father was very upset and when the terrified little chick messed down the front of my dress he was returned back to his family very quickly.”

Colour Me Crazy 2012

Colour Me Crazy 2012 is the follow up to last years highly successful art exhibition “Colour Me Crazy 2011.” The aim of the exhibition is to highlight the talents and abilities of individuals with mental illness. Colour Me Crazy fights negative stigmas and pushes the topic of mental illness, a topic that is hidden in rural communities into the spotlight.

In printmaking terms the word ‘Matrix’ refers to a surface, on which an image to be printed is prepared. Paul Oswin’s exhibition of prints draws on the many different meanings that the word matrix can impress upon us, the womb, a mold or die, a mathematical operation, computer networks and of course the well-known Wachowski  brothers sci-fi film.

Featuring works by Aly Aitken, Eloise Calandre (UK), James Gleeson, Adam Laerkesen, Sam Spenser and Joel Zika, Dreamweavers combines sculpture, digital media, photography and painting in an intoxicating visual feast.

2012 Print and Drawing Acquisitive Awards

See some of the finest works on paper from across Australia in the Swan Hill Print and Drawing Acquisitive Awards. The official launch and announcement of the winners will take place on Saturday 12 May following a celebratory dinner. Workshops will be conducted while this exhibition is on display. Nyah West resident and passionate photographer Linda Ford,  has completed a series of photographs of the 2010 floods. In this exhibition we see the slow moving waters and the forest replenished.  We begin to understand the consequent potential of this natural event.

Caroline Ellis became very involved with the January 2011 Floods when the Avoca River threatened to flood her family property at Mystic Park.  This exhibition displays a collection of photographs Caroline took at the time as well as drawings and paintings completed on reflection.  Other work created in conjunction with the Benjeroop and Murrabit communities will also be represented.

The gallery has been breaking perceptions lately, through both its art and other activities.

The Dreamweavers exhibition (last day this Sunday) looks at the darker side of sleep, presenting a stunning array of sculptural works, multimedia, digital imagery, sound installation and painting.

With a particularly ethereal sound scape accompanying the Sam Spencer “Trophy Wall”, a must see for all duck and game hunters, and with soft yet dramatic lighting, Dreamweavers manages to envelope the visitor in an otherworldly time and space.

This exhibition must finish on 15 April, so if you are yet to experience this incredible show make sure you head to the gallery before Sunday 5.00pm.

Another brilliant event at the gallery recently was a wedding ceremony, held on 17 March in the main gallery. About 120 guests were seated among the Dreamweavers collection.

Through events like this, the gallery is being recognised for the beautiful place that it is and is becoming a sought after venue for special occasions.

The main gallery has superb acoustics that lend itself to such an event, and some people in the past have even taken advantage of the Steinway piano for their ceremony.

And finally, there are a few things to keep an eye on over coming months.  Flood: Through the eyes of artist Caroline Ellis opened in the Access Gallery this week and is on until 29 April.

An awards night and dinner will be held on 12 May, there will be an artist talk and Moana Kidd will return to present a spray paint and stenciling workshop.

Our congratulations! Shoebox Gallery launched!

The Shoebox Gallery was officially launched last night at Jilarty during the 4th art:salon.

Inaugural exhibition in the Shoebox Gallery is Sheep in wolf’s clothing by local artist Jules Pilgrim.

The gallery will be located at Jilarty in Campbell Street Swan Hill for the next four weeks and after a week of rest will be located at a new venue in Swan Hill with a new exhibition.

Thanks to Jilarty for hosting the art:salon and the Shoebox Gallery.

The monthly art:salon will be held tonight, Thursday 23 February at Jilarty in Campbell Street Swan Hill. Join us from 5.30pm and take this opportunity to meet fellow artists, performers and musicians. Arts Playing a Critical Role in Dealing with Renewal

Twelve months on from the floods that affected so many, we see the evidence of the arts playing a critical role in dealing with history, disaster, and renewal. There is nothing surprising about this, simply affirmation that a progressive modern society depends on the arts to observe, enquire and respond.

In 2011 audiences were given the opportunity to laugh at themselves and others as we saw the locally written and produced play, The Great Flood, performed by The Swan Hill Theatre Group in sell out performances. The production brought much needed comical relief to the community. This year the Flood is touring the towns of the region to great acclaim and has been nominated for the xyz awards.

Last December Julie Chislett-Duffus brought to the gallery a body of work that was nothing less than a celebration of a landscape thankfully replenished by this major event.

Mystic Park resident and artist Caroline Ellishas been working with the Murrabit and Benjeroop communities to create murals that tell the story of a proud local people that came together during and following the floods. These murals tell of the collective pride and aspirations for the future.

Through ABC Open online, Mildura based cross media journalist Lara van Ray has documented the stories of a number of people in the Murrabit and Kerang region.

Currently on show at the gallery is the work of Nyah photographer Linda Ford. Her exhibition Kapel Purnburndila documents the massive floodwaters moving ever slowly through the forests, reviving all that is so dependent on that infrequent magnificent natural event.

Society needs to reflect, sometimes spontaneously, sometimes with the benefit of time, all that is around, whether that be catastrophe, accomplishment, politic upheaval, the natural or the cultivated world.

Art provides us with an opportunity to document significant times, to tell stories, to imagine, to capture new moments and ultimately to interpret, to help us make sense of it all.
